The irony of this movie being called The High Note is that there aren't too many highlights for this film, when it comes to authenticity, laugh-out-loud humor or outstanding original songs. Nisha Ganatra ’s “The High Note” is a movie with its heart in the right place and appeal to spare, but it doesn’t quite transcend its story’s predictable course.

Certainly not Maggie (Johnson), a harried personal assistant to an imperious superstar named Grace Davis (a magnificently intimidating Tracee Ellis Ross, working a cackling laugh and a killer wardrobe). The High Note is a pleasant and unsurprising stroll through the music industry. The High Note never reaches any great cinematic heights, but the music is fine and the ride pleasant enough. Instead, we get flyby comments about age and race and fame that don’t stick in any meaningful way, as well as an ongoing impression of talented women having their voices suppressed. Ross, you’ll be pleased to know, refuses to be sucked under by the cliché-filled quicksand of a plot. It is the perfect escape from the current world and a great movie night film. A romantic subplot includes implied sex, but no more than kissing/snuggling in underwear is shown. It allows you to peer through a window into this world without allowing you to get to know anyone inside.

With neither referral nor résumé, Maggie persuades him to hire her, magically conjuring a fully equipped recording studio and session musicians, then even agreeing to sing backup — a move that astonishingly fails to derail their romantic attraction.
