A scene’s end bookended by a half-second pause before the next scene begins. The same goes with the tracking of Amy’s current personality traits — another obvious bit of fluff that in the end serves no real purpose aside from partially filling the pause screen.
While you can’t fault the visuals and the effort put in to try and mask the evident budget limitations, that cutting of corners vibe is sadly something that plays into The Complex one too few many times. Without question, Dickie is the performer having the most fun here. A consequence perhaps of how The Complex tries to integrate a relationship-based tallying of one’s progression — something of which Until Dawn used but more importantly applied with purpose — so as to make you think about how to keep positive relationships in check. It’s nothing if not a conceptual step-up from Late Shift‘s grittier, more pared-down heist formula – at least on paper – yet The Complex is at almost all times constrained by its frustratingly cliched, unfussed execution. The Complex is an adventure game, released in 2020 by Good Gate Media. However, unlike Late Shift or Bandersnatch, there is character development enough to make you care about whether they succeed on a deeper level than purely whether you can configure the story in the right way. Even when later revelations and interactions hope to sully what should be a clear-cut path, again such vital information isn’t developed enough for the interactions between characters to feel that crucial to maintain.
