succession season 2 review

Who will take Logan’s place when he finally agrees to give up the seat as the head of the family?

That Succession has fun watching its characters scramble for any position of authority, as if competing in a particularly punishing game of musical chairs, is part of the show’s appeal.

Has to.

The words “Amazon” and “Netflix” and “Apple” are never spoken, but the parallels are impossible to ignore.

Well, Roman. It was only as the credits rolled on the Season 2 finale of “Succession” that I realized I was standing. Sure, his words are about as humble as a presidential tweetstorm, but at least he’s being honest. Ahead of “Vaulter,” the latest episode of HBO’s acclaimed series Succession, critics who had seen the screener but weren’t yet allowed to talk about its contents just couldn’t help themselves on social media.

The business is everything, and Kendall is forced to, as one character describes it, defuse the bomb he himself planted.

She’s also working for the presidential hopeful Gil Eavis (Eric Bogosian), the Bernie Sanders-like politician whose public face hides plenty of Succession-worthy duplicities.

In the end, the series is a richly rewarding watch, one that, in season 2, greatly exceeds the expectations of what was established in season 1. Next: GLOW Season 3 Review: Soul Searching In Sin City Delivers The Best Season Yet. Yes, the Roys are largely a despicable group.

Before the digital media shenanigans are fully underway, the episode begins with many of the Roys enjoying a crowd-free tour of one of their company-owned theme parks. You don’t have to like these characters, but what makes Succession so watchable (aside from the deliciously wicked dialogue) is the fact that you can still recognize humanity in these characters, even when they’re being complete and utter dickheads. .cls-2{mix-blend-mode:screen}.cls-3{fill:none;stroke:red;stroke-miterlimit:10;stroke-width:4px}.cls-4{fill:red}. New characters are used sparingly but well (Holly Hunter is a fantastic addition in the middle of the season), and the narrative never feels like it’s treading water or backsliding. Specifically, the episode concerns Logan’s belief that the news website needs to be “fixed” and his decision to send his warring sons, Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) to do the fixing.

For those unfamiliar, Succession revolves around the fictional Roy family, which broadly speaking resembles the Murdoch or Trump family. And though it seemed as if season 1 wanted to keep certain comparisons of the fictional Roy family to the likes of, say, most obviously, the Murdochs, season 2 is less hesitant in that regard.

The series may be a gripping family drama, but much of its power comes from a tendency to view that familial dysfunction from an angle that magnifies the show’s darkly comedic sensibilities. Our editorial content is not influenced by any commissions we receive. It’s a show full of alley oops, as you can see Braun impeccably teeing up Macfadyen’s Tom for a slam dunk, and vice versa. This is the opposite of the sophomore slump, as the series digs even deeper into its characters to phenomenal results. You shouldn’t really care about the show’s central family.

Succession Season 2 improves on what worked in the first season of the addictive HBO series, packed with character, intrigue, and profane insults. But the first scene is indicative of the road ahead.

The problem is, by the time “Vaulter” grinds to a halt, Shiv has spent her supposed trump cards and realizes she’s standing on about as much sturdy ground as her siblings.

There’s plenty more in Succession’s latest episode that makes it one of the season’s (and the show’s) best ever. More so than in season 1, Succession feels locked-in on a particular place and time that's easily recognizable to those watching. read more: Why Succession Deserves More Attention. That game gets even darker and more twisted in Season 2, as Roy becomes fixated on purchasing another major media conglomerate—the NBC to his FOX, with the clashing political ideologies presenting unique challenges to the takeover.

And yet, creator/showrunner Jesse Armstrong manages to make the despicable delicious. HBO’s capitalism-run-amok family drama Succession hits the ground running with a stellar premiere that leads into an absurdly strong second season.

They all hinted that the second entry in the show’s second season was taking on digital media and journalism in a way that most other fictional programs or films hadn’t quite captured. Everyone is in sync and no one is greedy. The characters hem and haw about the implications of the Roy family putting a strangle hold on the American news media, but the potentially devastating ramifications do nothing to halt Logan’s efforts to make it so. “It’s f*cking insane but I am the best he’s got.” Roman seems to think that Logan will pick him instead of Kendall, whose season 1 attempt to launch a hostile takeover exploded in his face, or Tom, Shiv’s overly eager husband. Review: 'Succession' Ends Season 2 On The High (And Low) Seas In the second season finale of HBO's Succession, the Roys regroup after their … Idris Elba, Caleb McLaughlin and Jharrel Jerome to Star in 'Concrete Cowboys', 'Rocko's Modern Life' Creator Joe Murray on "Static Cling", Rachel's Transition, &…. And they were right. They’re filthy rich, ungrateful, and possibly maybe even a little sociopathic, but the minute you’ve decided that Kendall is the devil incarnate, the show surprises with a strikingly human moment between brother and sister that reminds you just how traumatic growing up as the child of Logan Roy must have been. Indeed, while character is still king in Season 2, Succession deftly manages to tackle themes of the changing media landscape. There’s no other option,” he says with his characteristic sense of humility. In fact, it takes direct aim at the family’s news interests with one of the season’s major plot threads involving the potential acquisition of one of the few remaining news organizations not directly under their control. Following the dark, tragic events of the Season 1 finale, Season 2 picks up almost immediately where we left off. But what makes Succession stand apart from other ensemble shows is this cast’s eagerness to set each other up.

But that’s the trick of Succession. The season 1 finale took a Chappaquiddick-like turn off a bridge, derailing Kendall Roy’s (Jeremy Strong) latest attempt to take over the company his father started, Waystar Royco, putting him firmly back under his father’s malevolent thumb. Every single performer is at the top of his or her game, and all come to play. Furthering the notion is Tom (Matthew Macfadyen) coming of his honeymoon with Shiv (Sarah Snook) to a promotion that finds him off theme parks and cruise ships and on a collision course with the head of the news division, a woman who understands what Logan Roy thinks the news should be is the only news worth reporting.

When it comes to the head of Waystar Royco, nothing is guaranteed — except for expletive-filled tirades directed at just about everyone within earshot. For many of the Roy children, season 2 is once again about the question inherent in the show’s title. It’s in this exploration that Armstrong brings together the micro and macro worlds his series so entertainingly explores, allowing both to influence the other in fascinating ways. Like when the higher pitched version of Logan confides in his sister that he thinks he’s going to be named their father’s successor at Waystar Royco. But the heart and soul of the show is still its characters, and it’s not a stretch to say this is the best ensemble currently on television. She even tries to thank him for the trip with a big, loving embrace, but the recovering rebel turned manslaughterer can’t even reciprocate the hug with any discernible emotions. The real-world implications of what a corporate takeover looks like in the year 2019—especially in the wake of the Disney-Fox acquisition—provide a strong and compelling narrative backbone to Season 2, in addition to the evergreen question of who will actually succeed Logan Roy.

On the one hand, it looks like a big publicity ploy for Connor Roy (Alan Ruck), Logan’s oldest son whose disinterest in the family business has been replaced by his political ambitions. All the latest gaming news, game reviews and trailers. Not only were the Roy children (and son-in-law and Cousin Greg) still vying to land in the Captain’s chair, but now they were forced to also placate the patriarch, trying to figure out the best way to make him choose them as his heir. Can’t even hug your own kids,” he quips. And in Succession Season 2, the characters deepen, the relationships become more intimate, and the result is that one of the best shows on TV gets even better. We shouldn’t care about these bratty, backstabbing human beings, but we do, thanks in no small part to the show’s unparalleled ensemble. “Yeah, I saw that, you freak.”, Succession: Rating The Sibling Rivalries in Episode 1. In my season 2 review, I noted that show creator Jesse Armstrong and his team had finally (and thankfully) cracked the show’s biggest problem from season 1, which was how to properly blend the black comedy with the maddeningly realistic portrayals of elitist depravity.

Sure, it helps that the show gives even Veep a run for its money in the “profane zingers” department, but the secret is the characters.
